ADAPTIVE METHODS FOR SOLVING PDEs

ABSTRACT


Nonlinear approximation provides the theoretical underpinning for many numerical procedures such as adaptive methods for numerically solving PDEs, compression for images and signals, and nonlinear statistical estimation. This talk will explain what nonlinear approximation is and what advantages it holds over linear approximation. It will also illustrate how these advantages carry over into the application areas mentioned above.
