A new look at some determinants

Sylvester stated the value of the determinant of a simple tridiagonal matrix. Kac independently studied this and gave a derivation of the value. Another way of doing this will be given which extends to other examples of tridiagonal matrices. In addition, a couple of little results which I found while doing work in mathematics education will be given.
